Shift Happens

This was a very interesting video to watch/read. Everyone knows that England was the major power house in 1900 but soon fell out to others. This can be seen today with the outsourcing and loss of jobs to other counties here in the United States. I think that China will soon be the new world super power and replace the U.S.

Thinking about the future while watching this video, really started the imagination flowing. If computers start to be smarter then human kind, will we become their servants? Will they take over the earth? I know I have a very weird imagination, but if what this video is saying, then computers will be smarter then humans. Who knows what technology will be developed that could be detrimental to the human race.

I don’t know if our educational system can keep up with the changing technologies. If they are changing and we don’t know what is next, how can we prepare for that change.

I like that the information technology has changed our lives to make some tasks easier. I do think that it will be our ultimate down fall in the future though. We will slowly loose our ability to communicate with each other if we don’t have a phone or computer to type on. We will loose our ability to interact with people on a one to one basis. We need to be out and physically active, but with this technology we are rapidly making our lives easier, which could produce a lot of overweight people that sit in front of the TV and play video games instead of working out side and playing. Oh wait a minute, don’t we have an obese child epidemic in the United States now?

  1. It is very interesting to imagine the impact that changing technology has on our lives, especially concerning communication. The postal service is being used less and less as email has taken the communicaton forefront. Additionally, we have all seen the reprecussions of a computer systems shutting down in a company, hospital, or even our own homes. Functionality halts until appropriate measures have been taken to correct the issue. As technolgy improves it seems to make our lives easier for the most part, but we must also consider our increased vulnerability when it fails.

  2. Both China and India are emerging super powers. Unfortunately, I am not too sure that any of them will out take the US unless: a) the US implodes with its internal hatred--class, race/ethnicity, and sex/gender, and/or inter-regional/territorial conflict; b) it sinks into corruption and mismanagement.

What both China and India lacks are sound and good governance. Yes, India is the world's largest democracy, but it is inefficient in every way, and wasteful of its human resources--as found in many Third World Countries.
The Chinese economy is build on a pile of sand--state centered, and controlled by and large by the military, and its currency manipulated to keep their people exploited by the US and to make the exports cheap for American consumers. Thus, the huge trade deficit.
Both countries have a culture of corruption that undermines the body politic. Individuals with the skills and know-how are in straight jacket to pursue their aspirations. To get a business license requires payments of bribes and needless delays. It is as though the country's bureaucracts hate their own people for even trying. The caste system or the vestiges of its is the most brutal form of oppression. The very institutions that should nurture development of the people stifle individual initiative. It is small wonder US has been come the beneficiary of "brain drain" from both China and India.
